Bioblitz 2026 at Melbourne Square Community Garden
In Melbourne, nature is never far. Did you know we share this garden city of ours with more than 1,500 different insect species?
In March this year, Melbourne Square partnered with thge City of Melbourne and Southbank Sustainability Group to host a lunchtime guided walk to visit Southbank’s local community gardens.
This event was delivered as part of City of Melbourne’s one week Insect BioBlitz from 1 – 7 March – an opportunity to encourage participants to take a moment, step outside and look closer at the world around them. This includes Melbourne’s parks and gardens, or what’s hidden in their own backyard. Over 30 people joined us to visit two community gardens – Southbank Sustainability Group Community Garden and Melbourne Square Community Garden.
We were lucky to hear from insect expert Dr Ian Smith about encouraging pollinators and beneficial insects into our gardens and tips for looking for insects, along with community volunteers who are taking care of the community gardens.
It was a pleasure to host you and a big thank you to all who came!
